4.5 starsLauren King is a smart young journalist who has been buried in the gossip pages of her newspaper in LA. Going to all the parties sounds fun, except that Lauren has a passion for political news rather than VIPs. Her rival at the newspaper is Catherine Ayers, a political hack who was downgraded and humiliated into working the gossip columns after a disaster in Washington.Neither woman lets an opportunity go by to let a little snark fly, but when they come across a story with national impact, they realise they’ll have to work together to investigate it. The story leads them further into jeopardy, just as they realise there is something between them underneath the snark.This was a really fun read. I generally don’t like reading about characters who are nasty to one another, but this feels more like the snappy and sharp dialogue from a 1940s Hollywood film rather than anything really nasty.The story is presented from Lauren’s perspective, and she is clever and funny, and strong enough to stand up for herself when needed. She was a fun character. Ayers is harder to get to know, although she thaws as the story progresses.Winter was a journalist for many years and is comfortable in that realm. As a result, the characters have a sense of reality to them, as does the story. This gives the book a punch it might not otherwise have, and I loved the book for it.There was a problem at the end though. I would have happily given it 5 stars until the last few chapters as it was just delicious to read, but the ending felt rushed, and Ayers never quite managed to move to potential girlfriend material for me. This felt a little underwritten, and I think needed better resolution. Don’t let this put you off though; I’ll read this one again as it was such a ride.
